day four

we woke up this morning to breakfast with the cavitt's. paula's pancakes, wade's eggs, and some hazelnut and cinnamon coffee got me going. we set off for the book depository and the grassy knoll at about 10:40, a mere hour after our estimated departure time.

may i just say, sally's reputation as a skanky whore is well-deserved. that slut kept showing me one thing and saying another, which resulted in a marathon session of exiting and reentering nearly all major highways around dallas. lucky for us, we had nothing but time.

after glimpsing some of the largest owls we've ever seen (lochmiel and rockmiel were cowering in the back seat), we got ourselves parked downtown. wade "that photo of sanford wasn't taken our freshman year" wisdom, gabe "wade has to kiss my feet because he's wrong" shaukat and i took a series of irreverent photos near the point where john f. kennedy was shot. i won't post them here now, but you'll probably see them at some point.

around the corner from the plaza was the jfk memorial. if you've never seen this ugly thing, consider yourself lucky. there has never been, nor will there ever be, a less fitting memorial erected to the memory of anyone. the jfk memorial (photos forthcoming) has been described thusly:
  • "what the hell?" - jeff elrod
  • "what is this supposed to be?" - gabe shaukat
  • "appears to be built out of mammoth legos." - wade wisdom, via iphone
the dallas school book depository was a far more fitting tribute to the slain president. the three of us paid admission and donned headsets for our audio tour. we were tempted to choose "children's english" as our language option, but a sense of reverence overcame our earlier anarchic mood. the tour was informative and very interesting. seeing the window from which oswald shot jfk was a powerful experience, heightened by the somewhat out-of-place white x's on the highway below, marking the location at which each bullet hit. very cool, kind of creepy.

further highlights from the day involved getting pictures of lochmiel, rockmiel and "cockmiel" (wade) standing between the two giant owls at the entrance to the downtown dallas hooters, wade and gabe getting into an argument about whether a panoramic photograph of sanford stadium we found in a sports memoriabilia store had been taken at the lsu game our freshman year, or in some year before then. gabe correctly posited that the photo was taken at the end of our 45-10 thromping of the bayou bengals between the hedges. go dawgs. oh, then i beat gabe in pool. gabe 100+, jeff 1. steak with the cavitt's tonight.

here's to jack ruby.
